Information for Visiting French Scholars
Housing
Our visiting scholars are usually housed at the Hyatt House, which is a five-minute walk from campus. View the directions from O’Hare airport to the Hyatt House.
Northwestern Evanston campus
Use the map of Northwestern's campus. Most venues for the humanities and social sciences are located on the south end of campus, within three to five blocks of the Hyatt House.
For access to the library, apply at the entrance, with ID (a passport, for example) and your letter of invitation. They will provide you with a card that gets you into the library, including the stacks.
Food
Restaurants
There are dozens of restaurants within minutes of the Homestead. Options for a simple meal include the Golden Olympic (American diner, great for breakfast), Olive Mountain (Middle Eastern cuisine) and Unicorn Café. Slightly more upscale options include Found Kitchen, Tapas Barcelona, Koi, and farther afield near the Davis L station, Stained Glass and Boltwood. Also worth mentioning is the Celtic Knot.
Grocery stores
You can shop for food at Whole Foods Market, two blocks from the hotel at Church and Chicago. Less expensive options are Jewel-Osco and Trader Joe’s, about a ten-minute walk south on Chicago Ave.
Local transportation
Chicago is about a 45-minute 'L' ride from Evanston. Take the purple line from Davis to Howard. At Howard change to the red line and get off at:
- Clark and Division for night life
- Chicago Ave for shopping
- Washington or Adams for the Loop and the Art Institute
- Roosevelt for the Museum campus.
The cost of a one-way ticket is $2.50. You can find a helpful trip-planning tool on the Chicago Transportation Authority (CTA) website.
